Shifting Baseline Syndrome

Favorite track: Movement III.

about

This is an album/song (split into four movements to accommodate Bandcamp's upload length limit on a single track) themed around shifting baseline syndrome, a concept in conservation biology. Since the start of the Industrial Revolution, the amount of wilderness and the number of species has continued to decline due to humans. However, because this decline happens gradually and over many generations, there is a generational amnesia; we have collectively forgotten what a healthy biosphere looks like due to shifting baselines of what is considered "normal".

Over a staggering 70 minutes of dark ambient and noise, Shifting Baseline Syndrome transforms from almost relaxing and peaceful, to eerie, suspenseful, and harsh. The song structure is meant to mirror the gradual change from healthy ecosystems to highly degraded ones over many generations.
